First-ever Labor Day was celebrated in New York City in 1882

As per the US Labor Department’s website, before becoming one of America’s biggest federal holidays, Labor Day was recognized by activists and individual states.

Municipal ordinances passed in 1885 and 1886, helped it gain the limelight it needed to become state legislation. While New York was the first state to introduce and entertain the bill, Oregon was the first to pass it.

By the end of the decade, Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania followed in their footsteps.

However, the first-ever Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City.
